If you are planning a visit to Koh Samui during the rainy season, you might wonder whether it is a good idea or not.

After all, this famous Thai island is known for its palm-fringed beaches, crystalline waters, and outdoor adventures, many of which need good weather to be appreciated.

After having visited Koh Samui during the monsoon season myself, I’m here to share some insights on my experience and why it isn’t as bad as you might think.

When Is Koh Samui Rainy Season?

Koh Samui rain season is from October to mid-December

As one of the Gulf Islands, the monsoon season in Koh Samui typically spans from October to mid-December. This is slightly different from other parts of Thailand such as Phuket and Krabi where the rainy season starts around May and ends in October.

Please do note that the weather pattern in Thailand has been quite irregular, and that the rain season can sometimes start earlier or later, and end earlier or later as well.

How Is The Weather During The Rainy Season In Koh Samui?

During the rainy season, Koh Samui experiences a mix of sunny days and occasional heavy downpours. While it can rain for days at a time, it usually doesn’t last the whole day.

On average, studies show that you can expect rain around 15 days of the month during the rainy season, but from my experience, it is more like 20 to 25 days of rain.

These rainstorms often come in short bursts, so you still have plenty of time to enjoy outdoor activities. Plus, the rain can actually bring relief from the heat and humidity, making it a refreshing change.

When I was in Koh Samui during the rainy season, it rained almost every day. It did interrupt some of my plans, but the rain typically comes and goes quickly. So my recommendation is to plan a few more days than intended when you are visiting Koh Samui during its rainy season.

Is Koh Samui Worth Visiting During The Rainy Season?

While the rain might interrupt some of your beach days, there are plenty of advantages to visiting Koh Samui during the rainy season. Firstly, accommodation and activities are often cheaper during this time, meaning you can enjoy a luxury stay for less.

The island is also much quieter compared to the peak season with fewer crowds, making it easier to explore and appreciate its natural beauty. The rain brings out breathtaking Koh Samui waterfalls and lush greenery that only add to its charm.

So for me, visiting Koh Samui is totally worth it, even during the rainy season!

It is also worth noting that the island still gets rain outside of the rainy season, so the tradeoff might not be as big as you might think.

Rainy days are also a great time to explore the local markets. The Fisherman’s Village Walking Street Market and Lamai Night Plaza are popular options for shopping, eating, and cultural experiences.

This is great because if it starts raining, you can duck into one of the eateries, cafes, or shops and wait for it to pass!
